Inside the Mind - Sumarie Nel

  • What inspired you to start writing?
I had a knack for it. To be honest, I started writing just to pass the time, but after receiving an invitation to submit a story for a competition, I found it quite interesting and chose to pursue it further.
  • Can you tell us a little about your latest book?
My latest book, Forever Fallen, is a genre-specific fantasy romance. It features a unique element that I haven't included in my previous works: a three-part duo among my characters.
  • How do you create your characters?
I imagine my story plot and then I craft characters with their own quirks and dreams, plus a dash of magic that makes them more than just figments of imagination to fit into that world. This is done using nothing but pen, paper, and imagination.
  • What does your typical writing day look like?
I haven't had a full writing day in so long, but I write for an hour or two, with tea breaks in between. My writing days are spent without distractions, earphones in my ears, and a playlist that fits my plot theme.
  • What has been the most rewarding part of being an indie author?
There's nothing like holding my book, smelling the paper, and seeing my name on the cover. It's the best feeling!
  • What’s one challenge you’ve faced in your writing journey?
Finding the motivation to write and create when it feels like everything is falling apart. Finding a little ray of hope to hold on to and write another chapter.
  • Do you have any favorite writing tools or apps?
Yes, many. I have a tool for everything, from perfecting my outline, editing my first draft, to finalizing the print book. My go-to and best tool that helps me perfect the stories I write and smooth out my draft is definitely Claude AI.
  • What advice would you give to new or aspiring indie authors?
Here's a lighter version: Think of critique as a chance to improve, not a reason to throw in the towel because someone isn't into your work. I'm actually featured on MMT Productions' 'Horrible Covers,' and honestly? I'm completely fine with not being everyone's cup of tea—that's part of being a writer. I have no clue who wrote the blog post, though.
  • How do you handle book promotion as an indie author?
Honestly, that's a particular part that I still have to perfect. However, Facebook, Pinterest, and Instagram are very effective and 'social' platforms that work for me. Since I work through Draft2Digital, they handle most of the hard work when it comes to promoting and getting my book into bookstores.
  • What’s next for you? Are you working on a new book?
I’ve got a few ideas, but nothing set in stone yet.
