Inside the Mind - K.G. Inglis

  • What inspired you to start writing?
I read book after book and none of them had anything like the story that was in my head. So, one day I decided the only way I was going to read that book, was if I wrote it.
  • Can you tell us a little about your latest book?
My latest book is set in Far North Queensland. It is a case of opposites attract, he's Nephilim and she's a Druid Human. He comes from a line of Fey 'royalty'. She comes from a line of outback bogans. He is invited to her home for the weekend to meet her family leading to a series of comical situations. In the space of only a few days, Doran and Zoe must deal with not only her cantankerous father and interesting family dynamics, but also the wild tropical weather. It is an equally wild ride of laugh out load fun and steamy romance....until one of their lives is on the line!
  • How do you create your characters?
I'm not sure really. They just seem to create themselves, appearing in the mix of other characters in my book series. Many of them start out with only a cameo appearance which I later expand on.
  • What does your typical writing day look like?
I'm up early. I plot out the chapter or scenes I want to write and sit and write until I've completed it, whether that's two hours or eight.
  • What has been the most rewarding part of being an indie author?
I find it very rewarding to see the stories that have been rolling around in my head for years, to finally be out in the world.
  • What’s one challenge you’ve faced in your writing journey?
Initially, before writing Eternal Covenant, book 1 in the Eternal Series, I had never written anything before, so it was a challenge to learn to write descriptively. I had to learn to not assume the reader can read between the lines in terms of subtle meanings or feelings of what I've written, because let's face it, no one can do that. Everyone pictures a story differently in their mind, but they still need 'all' the available information to do that. So, I not only had to learn to write descriptively, I also had to learn how to then read my work objectively, as though I am a new reader, not the author.
  • Do you have any favorite writing tools or apps?
Not particularly, although Google has been very handy. I use a lot of historical people, places and events, blending them into my stories in such a way that those past events enhance and bring my stories to life in the evolving arc of the series. I have spent many, many hours researching each of those historical events to learn as much about them as possible before incorporating them into my plots.
  • What advice would you give to new or aspiring indie authors?
Write! Just write the story in your head, then re-write and edit what you've written until you're happy with the flow of it.
  • How do you handle book promotion as an indie author?
There is a lot of that, but every week I learn a new avenue to try or I learn more about a site I already use that might be useful. Plus, I speak with a number of other authors and we share information, as well as promoting each other through each others newsletters etc.
  • What’s next for you? Are you working on a new book?
Yes, I am currently working on a story between two characters who have been mortal enemies throughout my Eternal Series. In this story Brin and Marcus are brought together in such a way that they can't help but deal with their issues. What results is a clash of wills, entwined destiny revealed and a huge dollop of steamy romance, along with a lot of laughs (at their expense) along the way.
